Fuji FinePix A500 Digital Camera

Fuji FinePix A500.jpg

If you are on the lookout for an affordable digital point-and-shoot camera you can check out this informed review of the Fuji FinePix A500 by Terry Sullivan on PC Mag. 'The A500 has a boxy feel, but it's light and easy to hold. As with many inexpensive digital cameras, it conveniently takes double-A batteries. It uses xD cards, which are slightly more expensive than SD memory cards. As you would expect with a cheap digital point-and-shoot, the A500 offers no true manual controls. t has a small, 1.8-inch LCD, which gets washed out in bright daylight and solarizes pretty easily when you look at it from an angle. Fortunately, Fuji has kept the small, glass viewfinder, so you have an alternative way compose your images when shooting in bright light. I found using the zooming switch, which is very thin and difficult to move, a bit annoying.'

Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-T30 Digital Camera (silver)

Sony Cyber Shot DSC-T30 (silver).jpg

The Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-T30 is priced around $500 and is therefore not your ordinary "entry level' camera. 'At 3.7 by 2.2 by 0.9 inches and 4.7 ounces, the Sony Cyber Shot DSC-T30 is a bit larger than recent T-series cameras. As with the Cyber Shot DSC-T9, the T30's image-stabilized lens adds some depth over other T-series cameras. Its 3-inch LCD, compared to the T9's 2.5-inch screen, contributes to the increase as well. Still, the camera is plenty pocketable, and its vertically sliding lens cover integrates more seamlessly into the design than its predecessors, thanks to a raised portion on the camera's front face. The back of the DSC-T30 is black and covered in Plexiglas, giving it a slightly classier look than its older siblings. Sony has kept the straightforward menu system used in recent versions of the T series, and the button layout is very similar. The main exception is that the company switched from a cluster of five buttons to a five-way rocker for menu control.'

Features:
•Sleek Styling, Ultra-Slim Dimensions
•Slide Show with Select Music Playback1
•7.2 Megapixel Super HAD™ CCD
•Super SteadyShot® Optical Image Stabilization
•Sharp, Clear Photos Without Flash
•Carl Zeiss® 3X Optical/2X Precision Digital Zoom
•Capture Images In-Camera
•3.0" Clear Photo LCD Plus™ Screen2
•Versatile Color Modes
•High-Stamina InfoLithium® Rechargeable Battery
•14X Smart Zoom™ Feature
•Real Imaging Processor™ LSI
•Memory Stick Duo™ Media
•MPEG Movie VX Fine Mode

Casio Exilim EX-Z60 (Red) Digital Camera

Casio Exilim EX-Z60 (Red).jpg

The Casio Exilim EX-Z60 is one of those cameras which is really targeted at the mass market with its easy to use features and sleek sexy design. This camera features a large, easy-to-see 2.5-inch LCD monitor, as well as the Anti Shake DSP which, along with the Auto Macro and Quick Shutter functions, considerably reduces the incidence of blurred images due to moving subjects or shaking hands, ensuring that beautiful images can be created and enjoyed by anyone. 'With its slim, brushed-black or brushed-silver metal body and rounded edges, the 6-megapixel Casio Exilim EX-Z60 looks more like a slightly oversize high-tech business-card case than a camera. It boasts enough style to impress a fashionista, adequate zip to please a soccer mom, and sufficient features to keep a tweaker happy; unfortunately, it lacks the photo quality required to satisfy all but the most casual snapshot photographer.'

Astromart.com: Garrett Optical Gemini 25x100 Waterproof/Fogproof Binoculars

Garrett Optical Gemini 25x100 Waterproof Fogproof Binoculars.jpg

Art Fritzson pens his thoughts on the Garrett Optical Gemini 25x100 binoculars and leaves no doubt about his satisfaction with the scope. 'The Garrett Optical Gemini 25x100s are the real thing. They give great views of stars, clusters, Galaxies and Nebulae. They exhibit a very high quality of build and Zach Garrett inspires confidence in his readiness to stand by his product. They’re not for Lunar or Planetary observing – they’ll do an OK job there, but the color (Chromatic Abberation) on the moon and the flaring on bright objects like planets will prove distracting. If you decide to acquire these make sure you’ve got a mount that will easily handle the ten pounds, do take the time to balance them correctly, and seriously consider adding an index finder. So configured and equipped, they will provide outstanding and memorable tours of the night sky.'

Camcorderinfo. Com: Samsung SC-X210L Camcorder

Samsung SC-X210L Camcorder.bmp

David Kender posts a rather unflattering review of the Samsung SC-X210L Camcorder on Camcorderinfo. ‘Samsung is back again with new additions to the Sports Cam line. The SC-X210L replaces last year’s X105, with a number of improvements, including a twice the internal memory (now 1GB), a better design for their external lens, and no more cradle (all ports have been relocated right onto the body). As we said last year, this is a camcorder for a very specific market of rugged sporty types, but even people in those markets might be disappointed by the sorry, sorry performance. The SC-X210L has a short list of very specific advantages over other camcorders. Know that these are the most important factors to you going in, and there's a slim chance you might still like it. As we stated earlier, you could buy two cheap MiniDV camcorders and some glue at this price, and rig up something your skater friends have never seen before.’

Rubberized Roof Prism 8x21 Monocular.jpg

Who says you have to spend a couple hundred or even thousand bucks to observe distant objects? Certainly not Lee Spain. He is a "monocular man" and for a very small investment in a monocular, has been rendering public service by observing the behavior of "far off objects". 'What does it take to become a Monocular Man? Only $9 plus shipping and handling yields a “Rubberized Roof Prism 8x21 Monocular” from the Surplus Shed. Let me tell you more about this incredible little bargain monocular. Nikon Coolpix L2 Digital Camera

Nikon Coolpix L2.jpg

If you are on the lookout for a reasonably priced digital camera then check out this review of the Coolpix L2 from CNET. 'The 6-megapixel Nikon Coolpix L2 offers only the bare necessities for picture taking but, for its class, delivers excellent photos that require minimal effort. The Coolpix L2 squarely targets snapshooters, and more experienced users may be frustrated by the camera's lack of controls. Cash-strapped entry-level photographers may want to check out the L2's cheaper siblings: the 5-megapixel Coolpix L3 or the 4-megapixel Coolpix L4.' This camera features a 3X optical Zoom-Nikkor lens and a 6.0 Megapixel (effective) CCD for sharp, clear images. Offering you a choice of 16 programmable scene modes, this camera allows you to quickly select the appropriate mode for the scene you are capturing for excellent pictures instantly. In addition, the incorporated 'Scene Assist' technology guides you to take high-quality pictures in four of these scene modes.

Nikon Coolpix S6 Digital Camera

Nikon Coolpix S6.jpg

If you are in the market for a nice neat little camera you can rest assured there are several products all competing for your attention each with their particular features to satisfy varying levels of user-requirements. While it may be a bit daunting to have to peruse numerous reviews of leading brands you can get a fair assessment of each product's features only by checking out the views of several users/reviewers. 'The Nikon Coolpix S6's Kit Kat-size metal body is sleek, stylish, and generally well designed. It suffers from a few irritating compromises where Nikon clearly emphasized style over substance, but on the whole, it's a logically designed, easy-to-use digital camera. The front of the camera is simple and unassuming. Its sleek, gently curved face holds the lens in the upper-right corner, next to a tiny flash and an autofocus-assist light. The camera's 3X, 35mm-to-105mm lens (35mm equivalent) zooms internally, never extending to mar the S6's smooth lines. '

Features:
•3X Zoom-Nikkor lens with a 6.0 MP (effective) CCD
•256-segment matrix metering helps you get high exposures in difficult lighting situations
• D-Lighting feature automatically brightens the dark areas in the picture when in play-back mode
•Incorporated In–Camera Red-Eye Fix automatically fixes most instances of red eye in the camera
• PictBridge compatibility allows direct printing to any PictBridge or USB direct-enabled printer
•One-touch picture upload to the Web via the 'Transfer' button
•Bundled with PictureProject™ software with One-Touch Red-Eye Fix™ feature

Trusted Reviews.com: FUJI FinePix S5600 Camera

FUJI FinePix S5600 Zoom.jpg

Cliff Smith writing for Trusted Reviews reports that the FUJI FinePix S5600 is a rather fine instrument particularly suited to the photo-enthusiast. 'The S5600 has both an LCD monitor and an LCD viewfinder. Due to the restricted space the monitor is only 1.8in with 115k pixels, which is slightly larger than the screen on the S5500, but with the same fairly low resolution. Its surface is quite reflective, and despite the one-touch monitor brightness control it is very difficult to see in bright daylight. Unfortunately the electronic viewfinder is also 115k pixels, which isn’t really high enough resolution in my opinion. It appears to be the same viewfinder used on the S5500. It would have been nice if it could have been fitted with something similar to the larger and much sharper 235kp LCD viewfinder found on the S9500.'

Sony Handycam DCR-DVD405 DVD Camcorder

Sony Handycam DCR-DVD405.jpg

CNET previews the Sony DCR-DVD405 camcoder and offers an interesting comparison with a previous Sony device. 'Varying sensors and LCD sizes make a world of difference between the Sony DCR-DVD405 and its uptown sibling, the DCR-DVD505, beyond just the $200 price gap. The top-of-the-line DVD505 uses Sony's new 2-megapixel ClearVid CMOS imager and provides a large 3.5-inch LCD, while the DVD405 makes due with an old-hat 3-megapixel Advanced HAD CCD and an undersize 2.7-inch display. Those two differences are enough for the DVD405 to produce visibly inferior video--though still better than average for a DVD camcorder--and to bump a merely tolerable user interface over the line to annoying. In fact, most of the key aspects of the DVD405 are the same as its predecessor's, last year's DVD403; compared to this year's competitors, however, it merits a lower rating. As a result, unless you really crave the Dolby 5.1 Surround recording, the similarly priced three-chip Panasonic VDR-D300 edges it in their class.'

Features:
•Professional-quality Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T lens with multilayer coating for increased contrast and reduced glare and flare
•Super SteadyShot picture stabilization minimizes shake and vibration distortion
•Super NightShot infrared system for full-color shooting in low-light conditions
•Manual focus lets you adjust the focus with the touch panel in difficult shooting situations
•Auto, indoor, 1-push and outdoor white balance controls to achieve natural tones under different lighting conditions
•Digital still camera mode with progressive shutter system captures images at resolutions up to 2016 x 1512 on Memory Stick Duo and Memory Stick PRO Duo media (media not included)
•1-touch wide angle shooting lets you switch between 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratios with the press of a button; on-screen zoom and record buttons offer flexibility and comfort when shooting
•Active interface shoe provides a location directly on the camcorder to add optional accessories while providing power and 2-way communication with those accessories
•Built-in microphone with Dolby Digital 5.1-channel recording for rich, detailed surround sound
•InfoLithium battery with AccuPower meter system displays how much battery is charged and the recordable time left in minutes
•USB 2.0 interface for easy image transfer; can be used as an external DVD burner; analog-to-digital converter

Daily Record: Night Vision Use Going Mainstream

night vision in cinema.jpg

No longer the purview of the military, police or hobbyist, night vision devices are finding their way into some never intended applications such as the snaring of copy right pirates in cinemas. The Daily Record reports on the use of night vision goggles to catch or prevent would-be thieves from using movie houses to perpetrate their nefarious deeds. 'Cinemas are to use night vision goggles to stop criminals making copies of blockbuster film The Da Vinci Code. They will be introduced in Scotland for the first time as part of security measures which will include metal detectors and bag searches. Small camcorders and mobile phones are taken into cinemas to record the latest films. The cheats make their own DVDs which are then sold on the black market.'

Fuji's FinePix F470 compact is a neat, handy camera with adequate features to allow you enough scope to show off your basic "photographic" skills. 'Fujifilm brings us the FinePix F470, yet another compact 6-megapixel camera with a 3X optical zoom lens, a 2.5-inch LCD, and few distinctive features. This middle-of-the-road snapshooter shares the same basic specs as Fujifilm FinePix stablemates, the F10, the F30, and the A600. AkihabaraNews.com Samsung's 10MP Cameraphone

Samsung's 10MP cameraphone.jpg

Akihabara News provides a couple shots of the not-yet-available Samsung's 10MP Cameraphone. 'Samsung announced the first phone with integrated 10MP camera a while ago, and we were able to snap some pictures of this SCH-B600 at the COMM Korea 2006 expo.' First impressions tells me this is likely to be a little on the "bulky" side especially when the trend as far as the phones are concerned are tending towards the slimmer models. However, as this is the "first" phone with a 10MP camera and no doubt laden with features which may take a while to fathom, it would not be unreasonable to suggest Samsung has surely raised the bar in the competition to provide the ultimate telephone/camera device.

JVC GZ-MG77 Everio Hard Disk Drive Camcorder

JVC Everio GZ-MG77.jpg

The JVC Everio GZ-MG77 camcorder costs over $900 and unless you are searching for a high end product the major features of this gizmo can be found in cheaper models of the JVC line. 'By storing videos on its 30GB hard disk, JVC has created a camcorder that's extremely lightweight and compact, but unfortunately, the video quality simply doesn't stack up against that of most MiniDV or DVD camcorders. The GZ-MG77 is the high-end model of JVC's Everio line of hard-drive camcorders, with the largest CCD (2.2 megapixels) and hard drive (30GB) of its crew. Perplexingly, though, the GZ-MG77 lacks several features that the lower-end Everio camcorders have, such as a video light and a 32X optical zoom.'

Features:
• 30 GB hard disk drive for recording up to 37 hours
• Offers 10X optical zoom and 300X digital zoom for clear close-up shots
• Records DVD-quality moving pictures in MPEG-2 format
• 2.7" Widescreen Clear LCD Monitor lets you view your subject in full color during shooting and playback
• Easy Direct DVD feature allows DVD creation via USB connection without a PC
•Includes remote control, battery, lens cap and hand strap

Pentax Optio W10 Waterproof Camera

Pentax Optio W10.jpg

Cliff Smith reviews the Pentax Optio W10 camera for Trusted Reviews.com and concludes the compact is a neat little gadget. 'Despite its underwater capabilities, the W10 is at heart a point-and-shoot compact, and its range of features reflects this. It has no manual options, but it does offer 25 programmed shooting modes on an easy-to-use menu, three more than its predecessor, however some of them do look like they were added just to fill up space on the menu screen. For example “Report Mode” shoots at an image size of 1280 x 960 pixels, because apparently this is the right size for “reports”.'

Features:
•Waterproof to 1.5m
•6.0 million pixel effective resolution
•Large 2.5" low reflection LCD screen
•3x optical zoom, 4x digital zoom
•25 recording modes
•Movie with "Shake reduction"
•Movie editing on camera

American Technology Network Corporation [ATN] Thermal-Eye 250D Night Vision Device,

ATN Thermal Imaging.bmp

Wouldn’t it be nice to introduce one of the ATN Thermal Imaging devices to your friends? Of course, that is after you have dispensed with the "minor" issue of the above $10,000 price tag for one of these brand new items. A thermal imaging scope is supposed to be "a scope that can detect a human body hidden by dark smoke in a burning house and can make the difference between life and death". 'The Thermal-Eye 250D takes thermal imaging to a totally new level with 2X zoom capability and digital technology for greatly improved imagery. As with the Thermal-Eye 225, the Thermal-Eye 250D is perfect for use in many applications such as public safety, search and rescue, security and wildland/exterior fire fighting. The sharp, black Thermal-Eye 250D is the new standard in handheld infrared technology.'

Kodak EasyShare V610 Dual Lens Digital Camera

Kodak EasyShare V610.jpg

After initial misgivings, Riyad Emeran comments favorably on the feature-rich Kodak EasyShare V610 digital camera in his review on Trusted Reviews. 'The V610 really does have features galore, but one of its best party pieces is the 10x optical zoom lens. Actually that’s not entirely accurate – the V610 doesn’t have a 10x optical zoom lens, it has two lenses that combine for a 10x zoom range. In 35mm terms you’re looking at a focal length from 38 – 380mm, which really is phenomenal for such a slim compact camera. It is worth mentioning though that you don’t actually have that entire focal length at your disposal – the first lens has a focal length of 38 – 114mm, while the second lens sports a 130 – 380mm range. Therefore there’s a jump between 114 and 130mm. Whether this is an issue for you really depends on whether the exact shot you want lies in the missing area of focal length, and even if it does, you could always just take a couple of steps forward or backwards to compensate.'

Features:
•10X optical zoom
•Kodak RetinaDual Lens Technology
•Embedded BLUETOOTH® Wireless Technology
•2.8 in. (7.1 cm) high resolution color display
•Advanced video features
•6.1 MP for prints up to 30 x 40 in. (76 x 102 cm)
•On-camera picture enhancing features
